You wouldn’t worry so much about what people think of you if you realized how seldom they do. – Eleanor Roosevelt
We spend money we don’t have to buy things we don’t need to impress people we don’t like. – Dave Ramsey
“Just because God is smiling on someone else doesn’t mean He is frowning on you.” – Becky Young Fawcett (Ensign September 2015 pg 24) The article includes a quote by Jeffrey Holland “Brothers and sisters, there are going to be times in our lives when someone else gets an unexpected blessing or receives some special recognition. May I please with us not to be hurt – and certainly not to feel envious – when good fortune comes to another person? We are not diminished when someone else is added upon. We are not in a race against each other to see who is the wealthiest or the most talented or the most beautiful or even the most blessed. The race we are really in is the race again sin, and surely envy is one of the most universal of those.” Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the quorum of the Twelve Apostles. “The Laborers in the Vineyard,” Ensign, May 2012, 31.
Pride gets no pleasure out of having something, only out of having more of it than the next man. It is the comparison that makes you proud – the pleasure of being above the rest. Once the element of competition has gone, the pride is gone. – C.S. Lewis
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day.” – 2 Timothy 4:7-8 It never says I have won the fight or the race. The only important thing is finishing the race. Anyone who finishes this life valiantly wins. The phrase “Only one can wear the crown” does not apply in God’s kingdom. Therefore, there is no need to compare ourselves to others. – Shannon Williams
The other evening I met an attractive and intelligent woman whose only fault was that she was intolerable. She wanted to be liked and appreciated too fast. She burned out like a firecracker between the soup and the dessert. One of the most characteristic failings of such people is their desperate need to make an impression. But people need to be unwrapped, slowly and deliciously. Those who tear off their own ribbons and rip open their own covers lose the very appreciation they are trying so desperately to win. – Sydney Harris
Three things that will help you overcome pride:
Service – Don’t think of yourself
Gratitude – Recognize that your blessings come from God
Repentance – Realizing your weaknesses leads to humility
A man wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small bundle.
A man asked his young granddaughter, “Are you the smartest one in your class?” She replied, “If I said yes I’d be bragging. If I said no I’d be lying.”
Faces of Pride –
I can’t admit I’m wrong
Jealousy
Can’t compliment others or get genuinely excited for other’s successes
Selfishness
Taking all credit from the Lord
Pride – readily seen in others. Rarely admitted in ourselves.
Pride is nothing new – Satan had it in the war in heaven.
One of the hardest secrets for a man to keep is his opinion of himself.
Most people wish to serve God – but in an advisory capacity only.
We can either choose to be humble or be compelled to be humble.
In the preexistence 1/3 decided to give glory and honor to themselves. You were one of the 2/3 who agreed to give glory and honor to Heavenly Father. Have you kept your promise?
What has your pride cost you?
If you think you’re humble, you’re not.
Thou shalt not covet.
Humility is the fear of God’s judgments, pride is the fear of men’s.
Phenomenal talk by Jeffrey R. Holland April 2002 called The Other Prodigal. Discusses the jealousy of the prodigal son’s brother. He felt that because something good happened to someone else, something bad had happened to him. Wonderful talk about jealously, comparisons, etc.
