Temple Covenant:
(As expressed by David A. Bednar in “Preparing to Enter the Holy Temple”)
“Those who go to the temple have the privilege of taking upon themselves specific covenants and obligations relative to their exaltation and that of others. Elder James E. Talmage wrote: The ordinances of the endowment embody certain obligations on the part of the individual, such as covenant and promise to observe the law of strict virtue and chastity, to be charitable, benevolent, tolerant and pure; to devote both talent and material means to the spread of truth and the uplifting of the race; to maintain devotion to the cause of truth; and to seek in every way to contribute to the great preparation that the earth may be made ready to receive her King,—the Lord Jesus Christ. With the taking of each covenant and the assuming of each obligation a promised blessing is pronounced, contingent upon the faithful observance of the conditions. (The House of the Lord, page 100.) We covenant with the Lord to devote our time, talents, and means to His kingdom.”
In return, our Heavenly Father promises us eternal life. We in mortality cannot even begin to comprehend what that means. Oh how I wish we could get even a taste of it for a moment! My favorite scripture gives us a glimpse of what we have in store: “And I soon go to the place of my rest, which is with my Redeemer; for I know that in him I shall rest. And I rejoice in the day when my mortal shall put on immortality, and shall stand before him; then shall I see his face with pleasure, and he will say unto me: come unto me, ye blessed, there is a place prepared for you in the mansions of my Father.” (Enos 1:27) Can you imagine anything more wonderful? – Shannon Williams
Apathy is the biggest enemy of temple work.
If you perform the sacred ordinances of the Lord in the temple, it doesn’t matter what you missed.
One day as I was leaving the Provo temple I thought sadly to myself, “I’m not anxious to get back to the real world.” It was then that I realized that the temple is the real world. – ShannonWilliams
The Savior did vicarious work for us through the atonement. In the same spirit of service we need to be saviors for the dead and do vicarious work for them.
Temples are the center of the spiritual strength of the church. Satan will do all he can to keep you out of the temple.
